Kishore Kumar (August 4, 1929 - October 13, 1987), born as Abhas Kumar Ganguly, was a Bollywood film playback singer (Hindi, Bangla, Marathi, Assamese, Gujarati, Kannada, Bhojpuri, Oriya) and actor of Bengali Indian origin. Although he is better known for his melodious and hit songs of Hindi movies in bollywood, he has also made his contribution to Bengal, a state whose language happens to be his mother tongue. Not only has he sung bengali film and non film songs(Adhunik), he has also given voice to some of the most well known Rabindra sangeet (Tagore songs).
To name a few, 'Akash Bhora Shurja tara', 'jodi tor Dak Shune keu Na Ashe tobe Ekla cholo re', 'Amar Ondho prodeep' are some of the well known Tagore Songs sung by him. Although Kishore Kumar was always famous for light hindi songs, he has done no less justice to the Tagore songs sung by him. An untrained singer as he was, he left no trace of this while singing Rabindra Sangeet, something which he did not sing usually. The album of his tagore songs are very popular till date in Bengal. Besides he even sang a Tagore Song in the Legendary Director Satyajit Ray's classic movie, 'Charulata', for the eminent Bengali actor Soumitra Chatterjee. The song 'ami chini go chini tomare..' is still well remembered as it is here that Kishore Kumar depicted his marvel at portraying the youth and the vibrance of the character 'Amal' with sheer efficiency and intricacy.
